The pitless adapter is the fitting that lets the water line leave the well casing below the frost line without a pit or an exposed connection — a below-grade seal that has to stay watertight for the well to stay protected. Above it, the well cap and sanitary seal close off the top of the casing against insects, rodents, runoff and anything else that should not be sharing space with your water supply.
None of these parts are visible day to day, which is exactly why they get ignored until a test result or a visible problem forces the question. A cracked cap, a seal that was never fitted correctly, or a pitless adapter set at the wrong depth can each let contamination in without any obvious symptom at the tap. This is inspection and sealing work, not drilling, and it is one of the more overlooked ways a well stops being as protected as it looks.
